Midwest heat wave puts a strain on the power grid.

The Midwest Independent Transmission System Operator (MISO) declared an emergency alert due to high temperatures stretching generators to a much higher-than-forecast load.

The agency reported demand surged to its highest point ever in history Wednesday, peaking at 103,975 megawatts and surpassing the last record set on July 31, 2006. Previously in May, the agency said it expected peak demand for the summer to reach 93,842 megawatts, a projected 1.3% increase over 2010.

About Us – MoDNR Division of Energy

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Energy is a nonregulatory state agency that works to protect the environment and stimulate the economy through energy efficiency and renewable energy resources and technologies.

Division of Energy staff…

  • Collects and reports Missouri energy data, and conduct energy policy research and analysis.
  • Maintains Missouri’s plan for energy emergencies.
  • Gives technical and financial assistance for energy efficiency and renewable energy projects to state and local governments, school districts, and other consumers.
  • Supports market research and demonstration projects that advance the use of clean, domestic energy resources and technologies, such as solar, biomass, alternative fuels, and wind to power Missouri’s buildings and vehicles.

A brief history of the History of the Division of Energy:

1973 – The Missouri State Fuel Allocation Office was established within the Public Service Commission.

1975- As result of state reorganization, the Fuel Allocation Office became the Missouri Energy Agency and was transferred to the newly created Department of Natural Resources.

1977- The Missouri Energy Agency changed its name to the Missouri Energy Program.

1979- The Missouri Energy Program became the Missouri Division of Energy.

2004-The Division of Energy moved to the Lewis and Clark State Office Building in Jefferson City, Mo.

2010- After several additional name changes, the name was restored to the Missouri Division of Energy as it remains today.
