The Devil is in the Details

Geologic Features

Missouri is an amazingly varied landscape with a treasure trove of geologic features.  It turns out quite a few of these geologic oddities have something in common, their name.  The Missouri Geological Survey has compiled a list of more than 80 natural features that have Devil as part of their name.  And chances are there are more that have not been catalogued.  Included in these devilish geologic curiosities are the Devil’s Armchair, Devil’s Courtyard, Devil’s Honeycomb, Devil’s Tea Table, Devil’s Elbow and the Devil’s Sugar Bowl.  In addition, there are at least 25 features named Devil’s Backbone!  Several of these features are located in Missouri State Parks such as Devil’s Icebox at Rock Bridge Memorial State Park and Devil’s Kitchen at Roaring River State Park.  More information about these features and Missouri’s geology can be found in our popular publication, Geologic Wonders and Curiosities of Missouri.  –  Joe
